Kitten Tips Trimming Those Nails
Submit Your Kitten Tips
If you are comfortable doing it yourself, go get some cat claw clippers at
the pet store. I find the guillotine kind the best for my cats, but there
are other kinds.
Get your cat used to you touching his/her paws. Rub them all the time, when
he's sleeping, when you are cuddling etc. It might be best to try clipping
the claws for the first few times when the cat is sleeping or dozing. The
more relaxed the better.
Hold the cats paw firmly in your non-primary hand (left hand if you're
right handed) and hold the clippers in your primary hand. Push down gently
on the toe until the claw comes out. Then snip with the clippers. Be
careful not to clip the "quick", which is the part farthest in, and is a
pinkish colour. This will hurt your kitty if clipped, and will bleed.
Do them one at a time, one paw at a time. Take it slowly. You may not get
all the toes done in the same session, or even the same day. Patience is
the best thing to have. Giving a treat after every attempt might help your
kitty like it a little more. After a while your little kitty should get
used to it, and may even look forward to or enjoy it. My boys see nail
clipping time as extra snuggles and head scratches, and a good tasty treat
after. They love it.
If you aren't comfortable with doing it yourself at first you can get it
done at the vet. My vet charges $15.00 for two cats, but it may be
different where you live. I would get the vet to show you how to do it
properly.
Good luck, please post any questions you might have. :-)
